Can anyone enlighten me as to whether I can replace or rewind the spring on a 2003 XTR rear mech. Mines decided it can no longer cope with the pace of life.

Replace. Get the part number for your particular model from the appropriate page of the Shimano site.
Follow the diagram from the Shimano site and/or

Were you the English gentleman riding around Argonne National Lab on Sunday? ... or is this a coincidence?

Thanks for the advice Dave, I've tracked down the part number and I'll get it ordered tomorrow, it should be a great deal cheaper than buying a new mech.
As to whether it was me riding around Argonne National Lab on Sunday. It's a coincidence, I was working in London and didn't get to ride anywhere I'm afraid.
Cheers,
