I almost got run over by those guys as they were leaving a food-depot!
Obviously getting started on one of those requires a bit of effort, and
low speed maneuvering is non-existant, so why they decided to start in
the middle of the food-depot where lots of people were milling around,
and not on the edge near the road is a good question.

At the time, I noticed the front wheel and the huge rear disk, and it
all just looked funny. On a bike like that wouldn't you want a disk on
the front too? And the spoke count is preposterous.

Well, if it survived the ride, then I suppose it couldn't have been too
ridiculous. Having said that, I wouldn't have chosen that wheel for a bike like
that. I notice that the frame seems to be set up with S&S couplers. I wonder if they
can convert it into a tandem by eliminating the middle section.

Maybe they didn't make a crazy choice - is the picture from the
beginning or end of the race? They might have started with a
32-spoke wheel and had 16 spokes by the end.

Man, I know that in pro team time trials, often a guy cracks,
gets tailed off towards the end and he has to ride in alone,
but what you're talking about is just brutal. When you leave
the 3rd guy by the roadside, he'd just have a frame section,
seat, crank, and the wrong set of handlebars, no gears,
wheels, you name it! Hope he was wearing walkable
cycling shoes.
