17-18 inch bike ... looking for less than $1000 ... but I'm pretty flexible

I've got something you may be interested in, assuming you're also a
little flexible w/ regard to sizing.

I've got an '05 Specialized Stumpjumper that I bought new in May. It's
a 19 by Specialized's specs.

I rode it twice in it's stock configuration, then converted it to a
single speed using a Surly Singulator and a cog/spacer setup I got from
Excelsports in Boulder. I took the small and big rings off, so it's
set up currently as a 32x16, but I also have a 15t and 18t cog to allow
for different setups. I also changed out the tires to Conti 26x2.3
Survival Pro on the rear and Vertical Pro on the front.

As luck would have it, I suffered a pretty heinous shoulder injury
racing my road bike just after I converted it, so it's only got one
extra ride as a single speed. My shoulder's too mucked up to risk
mountainbiking, so I'm looking to sell it.

It cost approx. $1200 new, plus I added $70 in conversion parts and
another $50 or so for the tires.

I'd sell it for $1000 set up as a single speed and including all the
original parts to put it back to the stock configuration. The price
includes shipping to the lower 48.
