wtb - 40 x 20 x 1.5 mm box section

what material? 6061 aluminum? 7000 aluminum? 4130 steel? mild steel?

Also-you might look for streamlined tubing -- it has an oval cross
section. "Aero" tubing has a teardrop/airfoil type cross section. ,,,,As
far as rectangular tubing with rounded corners, I think most of the
extruded beams I've seen had sharp corners.

Sorry its mild steel i am looking for, streamlined would be ideal but its
sourcing it thats the problem.

I live near a big metal supplier and will ask about this material, they
have much new stock listed online but much new that is not and also much
more salvage material.

As for new material, the only streamline [oval] steel tube they carry is
4130 cro-moly, the nearest size they list online is ~43 x ~18mm, 1.244
mm thick. It is sold per-foot, and the price listed is $13.50 per foot.
The supplier is http://www.shapirosupply.com. The website says that they
sell by mail-order but they may not search through the salvage stuff for
small purchases.

The normal rectangular tubing they have has square corners. If there was
anything like retangular with rounded corners, it would likely be salvage.

.....Could you use other steel types or must it be mild? Not
stainless-steel probably or any real strange alloys, but what about
hot-rolled, cold-rolled, 4130 crome-moly? If there is salvage they may
not know exactly what type of steel it is.

Sounds like a chunk of tandem keel tube might be suitable; if you have a
friendly neighbourhood framebuilder who makes such things...
