  1. Do you know of any walking websites would like to create a link to our
walking page http://www.azenhadoramalho.com/walking.htm ? Some search
engines reward sites that have links to them by increasing their
ranking in search results. This because links make it easier for them
    to trawl the web faster.

Links need to be from relevant sites and not from sites with lots of
links which have no relevance to walking.

We would like to know about sites for walking clubs and individual's
sites and possibly commercial sites too.

And of course this is a two way street. We are happy to match any
agreed link with one from ours and that will improve the rating your
    site.

If you like, you can email us directly using our contacts page on our
site rather than clutter this newsgroup with messages. The contacts
page is in the left hand drop down menu.

    Many thanks,

    Chris.

    Chris,

You neglected to state that these pages are on a commercial site so most
urw folk would consider this post inappropriate. Secondly, I'm almost
certain that reciprocal links of the sort you propose are penalised in
ranking terms, not rewarded, by Google at least. I don't think
individuals or even clubs would see your proposal as a mutually
    beneficial arrangement.

  3. Dear urw members, first may I apologise for the typographical error in
the subject of this thread. I missed out the word: link. I'm sorry if
    this has caused confusion.

The idea was to communicate with people interested in linking and to
make this clear to others so they need not bother reading the post -
    unless they are truely bored.

If you are not interested in finding out about the benefits of links
between websites you need not read any more.

    Dear Stuart,

Apart from messing up the subject of the thread I tried to get staight
to the point to make it clear that we are not trying to cajole causal
readers into looking at our website. It is not easy to ask walkers if
they want to link to my website without providing a link to the website
so those interested in linking can see what they might be linking to.

Ever concious not to blantantly advertise I tried to word my original
post to concentrate on the subject of linking rather than saying that
we have a lovely place in Portugal. I can see now that I might have
come across as sounding like a commercial organisation and I can see
the more genteel could have their sensibilities offended by this.

To address this I should introduce ourselves. We are Chris and
Catherine. We met on a walking holiday in Portugal. We moved to
Portugal to the Serra de Sao Mamede because we like to walk and liked
this area to walk in. We have a house to rent out to tourists. We are
walkers with a website and we want links from other walkers with
    websites.

But, returning to the topic of this thread, you are wrong to presume
that relevant links are penalised by search engines and by saying this
you have confused people and put some of them off. You say Google
don't but Google say they do. If you go to Google and search for
Google Page Rank you will find http://www.google.com/technology/ and
    that should clarify the issue.

Thus walkers with websites who link to other walkers with websites
increase their likelihood of being found in a search engine. Quite
simple really but in order to be effective the content of the linked
pages have to be relevant to walking. It is also to avoid trying to
hoodwink search engine and some good guidelines are at
    http://www.searchengines.com/mistakes.html

Finally, thanks to those of you who have recognised the usefulness of
links and sent us messages via the Contact Us page on my website.

    Chris
