I haven't yet had my baptismal accident, I'm sure it's just a matter of time, though.
The reality of it all is that if you ride long enough, it'll happen... (I'm hoping the worst is behind me). 😄

HEAR, HEAR.
The worst crash i have seen happened a couple of weeks back, when i was racing.
In a race going down a sweeping descent, the officials hadn't sweept the road of gravel/grit.
One of the riders caught this grit and went flying through the air into a hedge. On his way, he knocked someone off his bike who became unattached from his bike but remained in the riding position, this bloke hit a gate. He in turn had knocked someone else off who slid across the gravel/grit/ bits of tarmac.
He had knocked two others off. By this time i had gone past, so don't know what happened to them.
This all happened at about 30mph.
Not sure what happened to them all, but the ambulance that was in the race convoy went missing!
Loking back at it, it was quite impressive

2 Bad crashes.
1. When I was a teenager, I was winging my 10-speed really fast down a hill and turned into a parking lot (Scott Stadium at UVA) I always took as a shortcut. I didn't realize that they had put a big chain up across the entrance. Caught me right across the thighs as I went sailing end over end. I was so embarrased (there was traffic) that I got up and pedalled slowly away in pain. Luckily I was only bruised, but the purple stripes across my thighs were there for a few months.
2. Took a quick trip up the road to my g'parents house. They gave me a few fozen steaks to take back. I was wearing flip-flops which was a bad thing since I was steering with one hand. Going down a hill one foot slipped and down I went sliding about 10 feet across the pavement on my hip. Huge, deep burn on my hip. Couldn't go to classes at college for 2 days because I couldn't wear pants. Finally rigged a wound cover out of a plastic instant coffee lid. That worked like a charm.
This unbelievable crash happened to my friend.
He was in Boulder, riding to his friend's house to help him sell a really nice road bike. A guy in a big SUV rushed a right-turn-on-red and knocked my friend hard to the ground. No major injuries. BUT, turns out the guy in the SUV was rushing because he was all excited to go buy that very same road bike.
So, basically, my friend was hit by a driver overexcited about cycling.

what was your worst crash? damage to yourself, your bike or caused others to crash? some of you may have seen this thread in the cycling equipment forum, but i thought id try it on this one as well to get a bigger response.
Two crashes stand out... ironically, neither happened during an actual race.
About 5 years ago on my MTB riding a sweet singletrack with my faster friend, Cindi. I knew I could pass her if I just pushed it a bit harder. A whoop-de-doo in the trail rose to a peak with a redwood tree on the outside of the 15 inch-wide path. In my effort to take the bump at speed, I hopped from the near side, only to land on a newly created (and previously unseen) rain berm on the other. A nice pogo effect launched me over the side and down the ravine, only to fall, chest first --no jokes please--into a log.
Rode out of the park, chatted with friends on the way down, and was talked into visisting the dr. the next day. Fractured sternum.
The 2nd time was on the road, sprinting with my cat 3 boyfriend. At least my cleats remained engaged in the pedals through the busy intersection. Coming out of one's pedals at the top of a wind up is never pretty, is it? An ambulance ride later : 2 dislocated ribs, "star" scalp laceration, and a veritable carpet of road rash.
Now I'm fat and slow from not riding enough (sigh).

Yes, I cannot tell a lie. I have no-one but myself to blame. But I did give my friends great entertainment.
Fortunately, they reciprocated. There were 4 high speed crashes on the day, and mine wasn't even the most spectacular. My mate had a blow-out on the launch of a jump. Try landing from a metre and half in the air, nose first with a flat front tyre. KABLAM!!!
Remember, stick to the track. By the way, I found out that I cut the front tyre aswell. Expensive crash. (2 tubelss tyres, 2 tubes of slime and one x rebuilt crossmax wheel.) Thank my stars there were no medical bills.
er, correction. . .
There were 2 medical bills. One for the doctor and the other for the radiologist. Turns out I fractured my collarbone and had a acromioclavicular joint dislocation. Apparantly a type 3. (whatever that means).
Ok, so when the pain didn't subside after 2 weeks, I thought I should have it checked out. Everyone can make that mistake. . .😕
Ahh...what good memories we are talking about here...
My worst crash happened when I was 7. My driveway (newly paved with the rocks still along the sides) is a good steep slope, probably a good 15+%. In order to get up without having to get off, we had a trick...Go down the big hill that surpasses the driveway and get enough speed to make it up. At 7 I was (am) a speed demon and had a really wicked 10spd that I stole from my older brother...I took the turn too wide, hit the rocks, and slid a few meters uphill face first. Several hundred stitches, two plastic surgeries (had to replace the skin I lost with graphs from behind my ears) and one hell of a concussion.
To this day I have a slightly crooked smile and some great scars. No [censored] I was never a beauty queen.
Ride like the wind...

Is this what's kept you away from your desk? I thought perhaps you'd sworn off cycling altogether and taken up a tamer hobby (golf?)... No Ratty, no Susan... What's this place coming to?

They say absence makes the blondes call faster, or was it something to do with a fond heart. . .
I forget. 😄
I'm trying to think of another goofball thread to start but I'm suffering a bit from goofball-block.
A hamstring pull kept me off the bike for a week and a half. I try not to use my shoulders when I pedal.
My worst crash was about 8 years ago me and a few friends one was a first time cyclist, were winding it up for a sprint for a road side sign all my mates were blocking me in by riding in a line ( we were on a cycle path not road) So me in a moment of insanity decided to drop back then sprint up to them and go past to win the sprint on the grass. A good choice ? What I didnt know was that at the edge of the grass was a kerb about 5" high. You can guess what happend. Yes I won the sprint but unfortanally I was on my head still cliped in my pedals screaming like a pig. My helmet which saved my life was in bits. I ended up with a broke leg and finger SEVERE grass burns and concushion. My bike was ruined and the poor fella who was new to cycling decided cycling was too danggerous and took up bull fighting( only joking) But he never touched a bike again. Oooooops. But the funniest one I ever witnesed was my team mate in a mtb race. He was in 9th place when they came to a bumpy down hill section. My mate throw all caution to the wind and decended about 10mph faster than any one else. Needles to say he overtook every one and was in first place when he hit a bump which jumped him into the air. On landing he hit another and straight in to a inocent tree. He tried braking mid air and snapped BOTH brake cables. He sufferd concushion and a bruised ego but finished the race in second last place ( with no brakes remember) and then spent the next 6 hours in a&e. MOggie
Well, this one is pretty mild compared to some of you guys' doozies, but I was about 12 or 13, cycling home from school, and it had been raining. Going downhill on a long concrete driveway, lost concentration and strayed onto the wet grass on the side. Main road was coming up so I hit the brakes. Next thing my schoolmates were pulling me (none too gently) out of the middle of what used to be a massive rose bush that our school principal spent most of his spare time pampering.
It took about 6 weeks for all the thorns to work their way out of my scalp..........
😎
But I'm sure I'll top that one day........
I was doing about 40kph when I got taken out by a car. I was knocked ice-cold. I regained consciousness surrounded by onlookers with my face in a puddle of blood. I had cracked two molars and I had a 7cm gash in my chin (left a cool scar 😄 ). My bike lay about 15-meters away and was totally pulverized. The driver was nowhere to be seen and no one had taken down his / her license-plate number... 😠
Here's a link where you can see a short clip of a guy doing stunts with his bike on a park bench. He kind of loses his balance. Not for the weak at heart...
I took out two other cyclist riding behind me during the peak morning traffic. It so happened that the rear wheel pulled out (of the horizontal dropouts that are used by Cecil Walker frames) and locked up against the down tube. the bike came to abrupt stop thus throwing me over the handle bars and into the tar-spa that is Stkilda Rd bike lane. Of course, the poor blokes behind had nowhere to go but over the top. I'm reminded of it every time I try to shave over the facial scaring.
in a crit with a 180 degree turn, was near the back so took it fast to make up some time.....managed to roll but got road rash from my ankle to my shoulder. bike was fine.
When I was 8 I me and my friends used to take our huffy's up the steepest hill in our neighborhood (probably around an 18% grade) and then have races to the bottom. One time we got about half way down and my shoe lace got caught in the front ring, I panicked and shimmied the bike, ended up riding down the last half of the hill on 1 shin, tore off a 6" strip of skin and flesh all the way down to the bone. Took about 2 years for that spot to heal all the way and I had a scar that looked like a horrible bruise there for quite a few more years after that.
That or the time I ran into a mailbox and knocked out 3 teeth :o
