This falls in the "good news--bad news" category. The good news is
that I downloaded the player and I'm amazed at the quality of the
video on many of the channels. One channel is labeled "young american
romance" (or something close to that) and they were showing a Kate
Hudson movie that was basically CD quality. The bad news is that
CCTV-5 is apparently only televising the semis and the finals which
will be on during the day here while I'm at work. I'm behind a
firewall that will prevent me from watching the swimming (not to
mention the Masters golf tournament). The prelims for the swimming
started about 20 minutes ago--wish they were televising that.

We get them on Swedish public TV. Swimming is big in Sweden, not so
much in Norway.

Why dont you see if you can get around the firewall
at work. Are you in a cable connection at home
and using Windows XP? If so, just turn on Remote
Desktup Connection, and open port 3389 on your
home PC. That try and use the Remote Desktop
Cleint to connect to your home PC from work, and
then run PPlive on your home PC. Your work PC
will merely act as a "dumb terminal" to your home PC.
As long as your home PC is at least an Athlon 64
PC, with at least 512 MB, you shoule be able to
watch anything on PPlive over a Remote Desktop
connection with no problem.
Dont forget to write down the IP address your
home PC is currently assigned, you will need to
type that in to the Remote Desktop client, to log
in from work. Most hardware appliances would
not be able to stop you from logging on to your
home PC. Only if they use a software solution, such
as Tiny, on an PC, instead of a hardware firewall,
would they have any chance of completely blocking
it.
On your home PC, you can turn on the access
to allow remote connections via Remote Desktop,
and then select which accounts on your Home PC
you want to be able to access. I would strongly
recommend that you log into your home machine
as an adminstrator.
The one caveat is that would will have to leave
your PC turned on when you go to work, so you
can access it from work. Because your home PC
is handing the traffic to PPLive, there is no possible
way your boss can find out what is going on, beucase
Remote Desktop connections are encrypted, meaning
that if they use a sniffing program, such as Snort, all
they will get is a bunch of jibberish. They wont be
able to figure out what you are up to.
