what would it take for me to actually be able to work in a shop? would it depend on whether i went to school for bicycle repairs, or is it just something you pick up if you get a job in a shop?

If you've worked on several different types of bikes, you shouldn't have a problem getting a job. The bike shop owners that I know prefer to get college kids who only work part time. Then when the season picks up they can get more and when it slacks off they can let them go easily. The money is not all that great, but the responsability is enormous. Just make sure to ask for help when you are asked to do something you've never done before. There are schools out there but your own experience is far more valuable.
