Won't you take me to....Puncture Town!

5 punctures in a 35km ride. That's gotta be a record?

12km - rear went flat. Pulled out my spare tube - found a tear at the
bottom of the tube. Concluded that spare is irrepairable (I'm
claiming this as a puncture...). Proceeded to repair existing tube in
rear tyre. Found not one but two leaks - one fresh and the second a
leaking patch that had been applied earlier (punctures 2 and 3).
Repaired both.

20km - front went flat. Only one puncture this time. Repaired and
continued on my way.

33km - rear goes flat again. While I haven't yet confirmed it, I
suspect it's due to my shoddy workmanship on repairing the previously
patched hole earlier. Walked the rest of the way to work...

So can anyone beat that string of 'luck'?

Ouch! I'm sorry for you, but I'm mostly just glad it wasn't me. ;-)

Hmm, tough. I ride with someone who claims he once got 3 unrelated
punctures within 5km, which clearly beats any 5km portion of your
ride, but I don't have statements from independent witnesses :)

I once used Wolber puncture proof tyres (they had stainless steel mesh) on
a tour. I was the only one to get punctures. Two (but in maybe 120K).

The worst I've had is riding home from Perth airport in the dark along Reid
Hwy. Ran over what turned out to be a pile of short curly bits of wire. Got
about ten punctures in each tube and only had one spare tube. Tyre was about
buggered anyway so changed the rear and slowly rode the last 5 kms home on a
flat front. Always carried two tubes after that. And a bloody phone!

I had a puncture repair day yesterday. Repaired 10 tubes, about half had
more than one whole. I wait until I have a heap of tubes to repair and
use up a tube of glue in one go, that way you don't end up with half a
tube of glue that dries out.

I find that they don't dry out if you use them reguarly. I probably patch a
flat every month or so, and use the same tube that I take on the road.
My current tube has lasted for about 2 years so far.

I suspect that regularly replacing the glue at the mouth keeps the seal
fresh and prevents drying out. /Never/ use a tube once, stick it in your
toolbag and assume it'll still be useable after sitting there untouched
for a year or two.

I got 5 flats in one lap of the Scott 24hr last year and ended up running
the last 4 or 5 km of the course (from memory it was about 20km per lap).
Needless to say I wasn't too happy at the end of the lap!!!
