A suggestion for making winter indoor rides more fun is to utilize the old college TV drinking game format, just substituting intervals for drinking. One poster has suggested integrating a football game into the mix and I already use the commercials for the same purpose. But there is a whole internet site of TV drinking games, particularly for re-runs. I have done it with some of the old star treks which are repeating endlessly on some cable channel. My favorite is the “Jim, Captain, or Spock” game, where you do an interval each time a character says any of the above. (Jim is 1 min, Spock is 45 seconds, and Captain is 30 seconds). When McCoy is on the scene, you are going to get some pain. A long (3 minutes or more) hill interval is done every time Scotty is under stress, or Spock and McCoy bicker. If there is not enough triggers, go back to hitting the commercials hard. Also Crocodile Hunter was a great one for catch phrases, (Crikey, beautiful, that was close, Terri) and the American Chopper game is brutal (awesome, incredible, bickering, Big Paulie freaking). Given the advent of 300 or more cable channels, there is no excuse for being bored on the trainer. And tying it to random events on a TV show really does give you some of the randomness of a group ride, and keeps you from adapting too much to your regular training videos.
