WINCHESTER BIKE WEEK 2006
JUNE 17th - 25th
Local cyclists have come to the rescue for the annual Winchester Bike
Week after
Winchester City Council has cancelled the Bike Fair in June and the
Alternative Transport Day in September - due to "budgetary constraints".
After 10 years, both had become established events on the city's
calendar.
However, local cyclists have stepped in to rescue the event, which
coincides with the national Bike Week.
A full programme of activities is now being planned, presently being led
by the Winchester Section of the CTC and Hampshire Cycle Training,
although it is hoped others will join in.
There are more stand-alone events than before, with an increase in
cycle-training and leisure rides.
An exciting innovation is the 'Great Winchester School BikeShed Check'
being held throughout June. Schools can have the safety of all the bikes
in their sheds assessed, with advice offered on any required repairs.
Local businesses can also book free maintenance sessions for their
staff, and to show support for easing the city's congestion, while
promoting a healthier workforce.
There is a full range of cycle-training available ranging from control
skills training for children to Back-to-Basics adult sessions for those
who have not ridden for some time.
The leisure rides include the popular Bygone Railways ride led by a Blue
Badge Guide, and a novices and family ride for those new to cycling. For
the more athletic there are both 200km and 100km audax events.
