Will newer cranks not work with an 8 speed chain?

It *should* work fine. BUT if you get rubbing with the chain in the
small chainring with an 8 speed chain, and try to solve it with a 9/10
spd chain, then there's a chance that the indexing will give you
trouble. Mr. Parla Campy will likely have the definitive answer.

One thing I'd watch for is the (wider) chain hitting the side of the
big chain ring when the chain is in the small chain ring. I spaced the
small ring inboard a bit in one case. I used 5 Sugino spacers (they
measure about 0.6 mm thick), and wished for slightly thinner shim
stock, say 0.4 mm, though there was apparently no downside to using 0.6
mm in this case. It even seemed to reduce the frequency of overshifts
toward the frame.
