Friday night saw us knocking back the wine in Calluna Hostel
in Fort William. Run by the guide Alan Kimber, home from
home, recommended. Saturday three of us drove to the
Strathan at the west end of Loch Arkaig and then walked up
Glen Dessary until we could strike up the south ridge of
Sgurr nan Coireachan. The day started out misty and dreich.
We had at least one real cloudburst, but gradually things
improved and once on the summits we had long spells of good
visibility. Headed east and then north east to 'bag' Sgurr
Mor. Great visibility all round and some stunning views
especially to the north. Dropped steeply down into Glen
Kingie then out to Glen Dessary. Sunday two of us drove to
Glenfinnan and used the MTBs to get passed Corryhully bothy.
This bothy really does have electric lighting! The bottom
half of the path up Sgurr Thuilm is disgustingly muddy but
improves dramatically. The weather started off foul but just
got better and better; the cloud lifted, the rain stopped,
the sun came out and the views opened up. Sgurr of Eigg,
Rhum, Skye you name it. Scorching by the time we reached
Sgurr nan Coireachan. Long steep descent to excellent
stalkers path then the MTBs back to the car. Fish supper in
Callendar, a bath and two large whiskies at home and still
six weeks holidays to go. Sadly I will be spending four
weeks of them drinking Chianti in Italy, ain't life a [censored].
