I am building up a new bike. Weighing up carbon vs ally bars stem. Was wondering exactly why it is that the pros mostly use allot bars & stems. It can't be cost so there must be a good reason why alloy is better than carbon. I am guessing that it's because alloy is better in a crash (bends as oppossed to breaking).

Most pros will use alloy vs. carbon because they are stronger. Carbon bars are lighter but alloy will almost always be stronger in crashes. Saving 50 grams between bars and stem means nothing to pros.

Especially considering they have to add weight to many of the bikes to make them legal....the bars/stem is a good place to put some of it.

There was something in either Velonews or cyclingnews (I can't remember) that, basically, said that pros were using aluminum bars in the Grand Tours because they flexed more and were more comfortable in 3 week races. I also believe that they said that the pro teams go back to carbon for the one-day races.Dave
