Yesterday evening wrecked by a bike ride. Went out for a quick spin in the
New Forest with a friend. As we were going down the hill to go under the A27
doing about 30mph with him in front and me behind a New Forest pony suddenly
decided to bolt into the road. The most amazing scene slo-mo' d in front of
me as man and pony made contact. Bike slid under the pony, cartwheeling,
friend somersaulted over the top of the pony, rolled on the road and stood up.
Amazingly the bike had only a small ding in the top tube but curiously the
_back_ wheel came out of the frame (road bike so no disc brakes) and was lying
on the side of the road. Friend had bad road rash all down his spine and on
his legs but otherwise OK. I cycled back to get my car, giving a wide berth
to any ponies only to return and find he had lost his car keys out of the
pocket between his tri-bars in the crash. No luck with a thorough search of
the roadside while being bitten to pieces by the midges. By the time we'd
sorted out his car, got him home etc it was 01:30 in the morning before I got
home having not eaten. So much for a quick jaunt out and back by 21:00 for a
05:00 start to get to the airport this morning. Only 3 hours
sleepzzzzzzzz.........
Can't help but think we had a very lucky escape from more serious injury
