  1. Hey all. I'm new here--first post. I'm a beginner who is just getting into cycling and I'm planning to purchase a new road bike. Unless someone wants to give me some other advice, I've tentatively settled on a Specialized Allez Elite.

However, my LBS presented a choice: a 2007 model for $1099 or, if I act quickly, a 2006 for $899.

Best I can tell, the main difference is that the 2006 has Shimano 105 front, rear, and shifters while the 2007 has Shimano 105 rear and Tiagra front and shifters. The 2007, however, has Zertz inserts in the fork legs.

Which is the better deal? Is there something else I should consider in this price range?

    Thanks for your advice.

    Steve

Get the '06 if it fits, components are better and Zertz mean nothing.
Spend the savings on pedals and shoes.

  3. I totally agree with Mish, full 105 is way better than a mish mash of 105 and Tiagra.

I would go cheap as possible because normally after a few months a beginner will learn so much about the sport that they will change there mind completely about what kind of bike they want.

  5. Definitely go with the 2006. Tiagra isn't as precise as 105 under load (in my personal experience) and the Zertz really didn't impress me (I ride a Cannondale R700 and it's just as comfortable without Zertz).
