  1. Anyone of the opinion that last years giro performance by diL was a flash in the pan?

He's more than likely going to finish just 10th on GC - which is the same as finishing nowhere.

He has done absolutely nothing before the Giro this year.

He probably wont be riding the Tour or Vuelta.

And based on his early season performances he has hardly got an autumn classic in him this year.

So thats a big zero in 2006. Quite a comedown from 2005.

All talk about stomach problems in the early days of the Giro is all fine and well, but he has done nothing before that to suggest he was going to be a force.

Is it a natural result of his exhertions of last year? Or by targetting GC in the Giro this year has caused him to change something in his preparations for the worse?

  2. He was never a GT rider but more for the classics. Last year was exceptional for him. He was a good rider before, won few races a year and one a year was more important. If he would be in a good shape this season, he would probably do something at the classics. Because he didn`t, it was obvious that Giro won`t be any better. I don`t know what`s wrong, but there are so many riders who had exceptional season or two and nothing more. E.g. Sevilla, Aitor Gonzalez, Casero, ...

DiL partially chose not to do many Classics because he was betting his whole season on the Giro and try to do better here. He was not even thinking about ProTour defense.

  4. Hopefully Di Luca will see the light and return to what he does best, riding classics and going for stages in GTs. He did plan his whole season around the Giro, but hopefully he will not make the same mistake next year.

  5. Di luca needs to stick to classics and just aiming for stages at the grand tours, all plaudits to him for trying to achieve every italian cyclists dream (to win the giro) but he has to realise where his strengths lie and concentrate his efforts there. next season i expect him to be firing on all cylinders at the ardennes classics. di luca versus valverde now thatl be good!
