I have a 20yr+ old deraileur on my 6 cog road bike. I'm getting a little bit of noise from the chain (not rubbing - new chain & cogs & wheel for that matter - built myself with the help of the instructions on Sheldon's site - thank you Sheldon.)
Also less than a year ago I replaced the pulley wheels. There is a little bit of play in the pivots of the deraileur and very occasionally - when pushing hard over rough roads I get spontaneous shifts (and yes I have lubricated the cable guides under the BB).
The main thing is that the noise seems to be generated by the chain passing through the deraileur and it is not as whisper quiet as usual so I'm just wondering what are the indicators that a deraileur is actually worn out?
I'm not going to buy a new one unless this one is worn out.
