  1. Right. When it comes to maintenance, because i'm relatively new, I have to ask for advice here.

    Trek 1000 (2004)

First, a little history: After extensive winter training, and then a brief period over the Xmas period where i left my bike in a basement in my halls of residence (im probably the only one who uses it) I came back to find something horribly wrong. The chain kept piling into the front cranks when you stopped pedalling. After some cleaning, it still had the same problem, so I figured that something had happened to the rear hub (the bit on the back wheel that holds the cogs?) Anyhow, when i took it in for a service (turned out i needed a load of new brakes too as i'd worn them down etc - wasn't cheap) they pointed out that the fault was cause by corrosion inside the hub, but they'd temporarily managed to free it up, and it was highly likely i'd have to replace it. I went away happy at having a working bike again. (incidentally, it was probably caused by the salt they like to spread on the roads up here at winter time)

Lo and behold, it's playing up again, just when im trying to get some performance training done. This means that i have to replace it. Now first off, i know i don't have to buy a new wheelset, but i figure I'd like a set of new bontrager selects because the 2004 editions are like a sail when you get a sidewind. The wheelset will set me back £129 but do i have to buy the hub separately?

My crank set currently is a shimano deore 8spd triple ([censored] btw) but the hub was unbranded so i don't exactly know what to do.

P.s: though i'd like to, uprgrading to a 105 double crankset might be a tad expensive.

  2. You can have the freewheel body (the part where the cogs go) replaced. But if it is a no-name hub I doubt you can get one. I you can't get a freewheel body you can try to buy an identical hub and take the freewheel body off of that.
A more expensive solution would be to buy another hub and have the wheel rebuild (using only the old rim) but in that case it might be better and cheaper to buy a new rear wheel.

  3. Contact Trek and ask them where you can find a replacement freehub body (if you are sure it isn't shimano).
