  1. I want to buy a spare pair of wheels to keep shod with slicks, for when
I use my mountain bike on pure roads. The current wheels are Hope XC
hubs, Mavic 223 Rims, discs. (a) Do I need wheels which cost as much?
Or would something cheaper do as well for light use. (b) Should I
    consider narrower wheels?

Mavic X618 rim with Shimano LX hub provides good value, I reckon -- a fair
compromise between cost, weight, strength and durability. I got my
brother these for road use with Schwalbe City Jet 1.5 tyres. Merlin
Cycles' price and quality is excellent; tyres from Wiggle.

What size slicks would you like to use?
