  1. guys is a regular thing for wheels to be buckled through normal daly commuting. i know its a tough question, but tram tracks and stones etc seem to be buckling me reguardless of how careful i am

anyone else get the same problem

  2. Unless you're real heavy or unusually careless and/or fast, I would say "no". I ride on sidewalks and hit uneven joints and broken pavement regularly and only have to get my wheels straightened about once a year.

Do you have a new wheelset? The new ones sometimes bend a bit until the first time you true them up.

  3. I'm not careful at all on my road bike. I've even got semi-grippy tires so I can take it off road on tours and such. I've got 36 spoke non butted wheels built for fully loaded touring though, so it's made to take me (199.9 lbs) plus my gear (60 lbs). I had my first broken spoke at 3000 miles.

If you've got a super lightweight racing bike with carbon-titanium-plutonium wheels and you are on a weight loss program starting at 300 lbs, I suspect you'll have some issues.

What kind of wheels have you got?

  4. Wheel type is very important. In fact if you have very expensive wheels with few spokes, look out, they are more prone to buckling than the cheaper, heavier ones. For those with lots of money, they can buy heavy 32/36 spoke commuting wheels and have another set of Ksyriums or Shamals or whatever for their bunch rides to show off their money and flashy style...

I want to qualify my own remarks by saying that my 26" wheels all have no fewer than 32 spokes, and my 27" road wheels have 36 spokes as well as the cushioning of a 32mm tire.
