Belgium is one of the leading producers of vital wheat gluten in the world. The leading manufacturer, Cerestar (a subsidiary of Cargill), is based here. However, wheat gluten cannot be purchased in the retail sector in Belgium. Is this a commercial stitch-up?
Wheat gluten is widely available in LC mail order stores in the UK but although delivery in the UK is free, the cost of delivery to Belgium is prohibitive. For example, a 500 gram bag costs 1.30 pounds and postage is 5.60 pounds. Postage on 2 bags is 8.40 pounds.

Vital wheat gluten has commercial uses. Large bakeries use large amounts in baking. Adding lower protein flour plus higher protein purified gluten separately gives greater control over the end product.
Retail stores may not be aware there is a market for gluten as a product. In the US I don't recall seeing it in stores before bread making machines became popular. Now it is easy to find. Sure enough, recipes that come with bread machines call for gluten.

It's true that LC has not taken off in Belgium although there is some promotion of high protein products as part of a weight loss programme. Bread machines are popular enough but I have not seen any home recipes calling for additional wheat gluten. Since this morning, I have found a store willing to order wheat gluten for me in 1 pound bags. Success at last.
I've seen sheep in pastures around here, the lamb in the grocery store is imported from NZ.
Chuckle. That's like living in southern California. Lemon orchards all around. Constantly passing truckloads of localy grown lemons. Go in the grocery store and what do all of the lemons there say? Grown in Florida. Bizzare.
