O.K. I'm new to this forum and cycling as you can tell by my post count. I've been riding for the past week before work about 3 miles a day. It's not much, but I havn't ridden for about 10 years. I weigh 208 lbs and am 5'-11". I'm saving for a new bike since I'm riding a Wal-Mart special that weighs 35lbs. I have $250 saved so far and it's hard to find anything decent for that price. I'm looking for used bikes as well on craigs list and ebay but I hate to buy a bike without riding it. I'm looking for a hybrid or a mountain bike that I can put slicker tires on. Is it possible to find something decent for this price or a few dollars more or should I spend the mony on a cyclometer and a light for my crappy NEXT brand bike.

Why are you looking at a hybrid or a mountain bike with slicks? If it is because you are more comfortable on a bike that you are more upright, but plan on riding on pavement, I might suggest a flat bar road bike, I love them. You can find a good flat bar for not much more, especially if the bike shop still has last year's model.

I'm mostly interested in riding on the road during the week but on the weekends I will be riding on the local bike trail which is gravel and a few mild woods trails. I would like to have at least a hard tail with front suspension.

Oh, ok. I can't help you much with that. I don't go off road and don't ride a mountain bike, except for the not so good one I use when I walk my dog.
I don't know what you consider a decent bike, but there a few mountain, hybrids that you can get for $250-$350. For example, a new Trek 7000 msrp is $259.99.
I understand your fear of buying a bike without a ride. What you could do is go to your local LBS and check a few that fit you and see if you can find a used one of those.
