I think some of you people should re-calerbrate your bike computers. But for me i race "A" grade "ELITE'S" Here in Australia and by myself, on a fairly hilly 85 km's i would average about 32kph. And it does not vary a lot over a longer or shorter ride. We race on a very hilly circuit and would average up near 40kph. That's why i question some of the super human averages quoted here.

Did a 30km time trial yesterday and clocked 31.79kph which I was pretty pleased with (although I placed last :-( ). On a longer ride I tend to hover around 28kph.

When I am unfit, like now, I battle to go over 30km/h average.

Well, I am new on this board but have been riding most of my life on BMX and MTB's. Started riding a road bike last year and like it.
My current average over a 31 km distance is 34 kph. This ave. I did the other day. There are three climbs with a bunch of little hills in between. The three climbs are gradual . The first is no more than 4% for about a km, the second ramps up to about 6% for about a km, then the last hill ramps up to about 9% for about a km.
Not sure how good my ave speed is, but it is good enough for me, considering that I have a lot of upper body mass

Do on average 22-23kmh on hills and 25-26kmh on flats...
You guys are freaky doing 30s and 40s man!
BUT, I cycle for fitness and enjoyment, as long as I can keep doing it, using my averages as a motivating factor, Im happy.

my averages are increasing though are nowhere compared to some of u others. i consider myself a decent rider so i hope thats because i live in hilly sydney.
commuting 12.47km, my fastest ever was 24 min 45 sec at 30.23km/h. this doesn't sound fast but i couldn't have gone faster. on the flat bits my speedo read around 40 km/h. this commute includes the gladesville bridge and victoria road which rolls through drummoyne and balmain etc.
i'll be a happy man when i break the 20 min mark for my commute. that comes to 37.41 km/h so it should be doable... eventually.
bunch rides of ~70km at 28-29 km/h

My best so far ( this very evening infact ) is somewhere around 32 km/h (20mph) for my 14km commute, that's my recent personal target acheived I think. Not sure exactly, speeds ranged 30-40km/h.. I've just started concentrating on an H.R monitor properly more than speed which appears to help enourmously in holding the optimum pace.
Been cycling for about 3 months now, I hope I can continue to improve.

thats pretty fast ebola. i usually go faster in the morning.
do u experience any climbs or headwinds on ur journey
-
It's a relatively flat route (parallel to a river) & in calm weather, I certainly can't do that in hilly terrain or on a windy day.
Recently I've also sometimes tried going along the waterfront itself which is literally flat for 2/3rds of the journey. Not as good a surface but no traffic to think about, so I can just get my head down and pedal: I think this has helped me improve.
Prior to cycling I used to walk fast 45mins x 2 to the previous closer office.

Dont care about avg speed.I ride by cadence.
-
it looks like a few people here avg faster than some races.

I ride by cadence as well. The average speed (unless your in a controlled environment) is influenced by so many factors, warm up, cool down, traffic lights, headwinds etc. -
i did a 1 hour recovery ride today. average speed was 20km/hr with average watts 130. the roads around here are slow, lots of short steep hills and it is was quite windy.
my choice is either ride the somewhat flatter main roads with thousands and thousands of autos or ride the side roads that are hilly and slow, along with speeding cars passing me at 100km/hr. -
My personal best was last Sunday. 32 miles, 16 out and 16 back at an average of 14.9. Whaddya think?
-
I usually ride by time and comfort. Funny thing is im a sprinter and probably the slowest trainer I know. If I hade to put a speed on it I would average 24 - 27kmh on flats. That doesnt change much with fitness btw
-
i usually avg about 21-25 in races
and try to keep it above 15 with hills during traning
for serious climbs i have to keep it above 13
anyone wanna explain cadance and how to determine ur target heart rate?

Riding at about 4500 to 6500 feet I average around 20 mph for 30 miles. Of course that is when it isn't snowing or I have to go around avalanches slides.

I just commute 9.7km each way over two hills & use my average/topspeed for motivation. They may not be world records but breaking them is great & I have a wealth of excuses and another day if I don't.
oh and they are 19.4kph avearage with a 51kph top speed.
