Yes. But does it make any less sense than inumerable other 'alternative" medical practices? It
simply reinforces the idea that absolutely any human activitiy is capable of evolving into a medical
treatment, and can acquire an unjustified reputation for efficacy through testimonial, rumour and
hearsay. This has been proved over and over within conventional medicine and now "alternative"
medicine is doing it all again.

And it is no mystery as to why, when in controlled trials of many conditions 40-50% of subjects
given an inert substance or sham treatments are better later, for a variety of reasons proabbaly
mostly due to spontaneous events.

I am coming round to the view that there may be a deep psychosocial or cultural need for lots of
"feel better/ feel good" medical "treatments" and that it doesn't seem to matter too much whether
they have any intrinsic biomedical activity. Since they are going to be used unsupervised for
myriads of minor complaints it is perhaps more important that they be harmless than that they
actually do anything. All known truly useful drugs and herbs, the ones that do have intrinsic
medical actitivity, seem to have too much potential for ill-effects to qualify for that
environement. I can't think of many exceptions. Can anyone?
