What is wrong with ARBR?

A review of the Google archives on ARBR will reveal the vicissitudes this
newsgroup has gone through since its inception long, long ago. It used to be
a very clubby place where everyone was greeting one another with brainless
repartee. Those days are long gone, I have seen to that.

Still, it would not be such a bad thing if we were all friendlier to one
another. Frankly, it is easy to be a *******; it is not so easy to be a nice
guy. I would like to see this group get back some of its former clubbiness.
The posts of Bill Baka remind me how good this group could be if we would
all stop trying to be such assholes all the time. I exhort and encourage all
of you to look to your better natures. After all, there is no one here but
us cyclists, a fairly innocent pastime you would agree.

I think the main trouble springs from the fact that we are all older men and
therefore contrary as all hell. Let us try to remember what it was like when
we were younger and full of hope for the future. Just because we all have
one foot in the grave does not mean we have to be such ornery cusses all the
time. It would not be such a bad thing if we could get some women involved
in this group as they have altogether gentler and kinder natures. Yea, that
is the problem all right - nothing but crusty old men who hate one another
and mostly just hate themselves.

I am afraid I have scared off most of the women who used to be on this
group. That is because I put them on a pedestal and when they do not live up
to my expectations of them I go berserk. I need to remember that they are
just human after all and not replicas of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I try not to be an ass except in response to 'one' now plonked who was
trying to make a career out of harassing me. Some politics we may
diverge into, but for the most part this should be bike oriented. I
didn't go out today only because by the time I could it was already 80
and headed to 98, not what I want to ride in, especially now when it is
supposed to be cooling down.

I am older but hardly have one foot in the grave, and there are 20
somethings that come on here looking for advice who may be turned back
by all the dissent and excessively long qoute x 10 posted arguments.

I would be perfectly happy to have a wife who enjoyed cycling as I do,
but she drives, not rides, cars or motorcycles.

that the average age of the occupants of the Roman catacombs was 23.

Well then 58 in 2 weeks makes me an antique, but I still love to run at
sprint speed and to stand and attack hills up to a few hundred feet.
That makes me more of an anomaly than an antique. I still have
black/brown hair where my friends even ten years younger have Grey or white.

All anyone ever had to do to avoid me was to keep their freaking liberal
political views off the newsgroup, but that they were never able to do that
and so I had to take them on. I insist on balance if nothing else.

However, I don't think Joao was ever guilty of any misdeeds on ARBR so I do
feel some empathy for him.

By the way, Mr. Byron Ball of BROL was one of the chief offenders and it was
my delight to take him to the woodshed for a good sound thrashing.

It was indeed a joyous day for ARBR when Perry Butler of Alexandria,
Minnesota finally found a home on BROL. He was always one of the dullest
clods ever to infest ARBR. Good riddance to him! Prior to his leaving this

I can't stand website forum boards. My God, why bother to say anything at
all if you have to guard everything you say. The thought of someone having
any say-so over what I say is repugnant to me in the extreme. For Christ's
sakes, why doesn't everyone just grow up!

I NEVER interfere with on-topic messages and I note that Mr. Sherman does
not either. The main thing that others need to realize is that both Mr.
Sherman and I are the quintessential gentlemen. If you can't get along with
us, that means you can't get along with anyone unless you demand that others
agree with you 100% of the time about everything.

Anyone who can't take disagreement, however expressed, should not be on
Usenet in the first place.

Yes, Tom is quite right about this. Hell Bells, flame wars are often the
only thing that engages my interest. There is nothing finer in this world

Before Perry Butler of Alexandria, Minnesota left this group for greener
pastures, he proved himself a complete asshole. That is why I say good
riddance to him. But if he wants to show up here on occasion and advise
