There are two phenomena that must have biological terms. Can anyone help with these?
1. There is a desert zone across the planet in the subtropical areas lining the tropic of Capricorn and Cancer - is there a term for that?
2. I note that slow metabolism = long life in the longest living creatures and plants, lichen, the Welsitsdchia mirabilis, millenium plant, tortoises, bristlecone pines, etc. Is there a term or model for that idea?

This inverse phenomenon also holds generally for heartbeats, that is, the faster an animal's heartbeat the shorter its lifespan. Which gives rise to the heartbeat-invariant system holding that every organism is born with a set number of heartbeats. Take home message: don't exercise, you're using them up faster.
