Picture Show, over at Ye Old Exeter Theatre,
The corner,
Newbury and Exeter Streets, after
Mid-Night, every Friday night?
If so, O, woe, I never did that,
Although I wanted to go, hear laughter
To hang so precariously from the rafters.
But by the way, don't you know?
Both carefull and control
Have only one L."

O, so please know ~ Hear ye, Hear me!
For any who seek truth,
Who wish know
What happened to Rocky, hung that night, Boston,
Massachusetts, ca. 1979, one late
November ~ No fiction, here, all facts,
My accounting ~ Just see ~ 'The Boston Herald,'
A newspaper, for Rocky's story,
Or one version, written on the Herald's
Front page! To find, search me,
My name! For that reporter interviewed me,
A young and foolish grrl, I,
Who thought suicide, who never suspected, or
Thought wonder,
What If?
What if what the police told me,
That night,
Untrue?

Perhaps the cops hurt him,
Perhaps not. A crying rage,
He raged,
When they found him, off
Clarendon Street. Over the
South End, ca. 1979. Two
Days before
Thanksgiving,
He had gone
to MGH.
That very day,
He'd gone
To Mass General Hospital,
Begged for help.
They, the docs,
Turned him
Away.
He died
In jail later that
Same day,
Picked up
Screaming on the street,
3am, 3 blocks
Quoted message said:From our home, on his way
Home to us, to
Sleep. A 26-year-old boy.
Found screaming on the street,
The cops tossed him in jail,
Whereupon, sometime between
3am & 5am
He hung himself ~
John's blew sweater, his instrument
Of escape
Who'd
Of thought?
Shoestrings,
Yes,
A noose ~
But a blew sweater? No autopsy
Ever performed, ever done, none
Sung, till now!
Buried in pauper's field,
Just outside Boston, where
We were late
For his graveside funeral, our
Arrival delayed, our pack aged good
Intentions undone.
But we arrived,
After the priest performed
Last rites, left. Gone.
All done,
I looked back,
As we drove away,
Thought
To myself,
Rocky, I'll find a way, I'll
Do
You justice. I promise this.
I do.
I imagined I saw him
Perched
On the fieldstone
Fence, a cat,
His velvet eyes watching us
Depart ~
And what
Of Alpine Villas?
Please shorten,
Without which
No message
Makes easily
Understood sense ~
Or any biscuit crisp.

"Well, slap my hands!
Mama, I'm the one who's supposed
To have walked out on you,
Left you with pain and debt.
Despair, scars, and disease ~
Well, slap my hands!
With pain and debt
Here we are again.
I can see you so clear,
Up on the EL Train
And me waving from the ground."
