I generally find the "flat" or "dead" leg feeling is caused by compounded training without proper recovery. Proper recovery may not just mean rest for some people. I know that I (personally) need a massage every 3-4 weeks to keep my legs feeling fresh.

After a few weeks of hard training my muscles need a little help getting all the "junk" out that has built up from excessive use and fatigue.

  3. Nutrition should be another place to look. It depnds on when you feel that "flat" leg feeling. More details could help.

i'll feel good for about an hour and i'll be one of the strongest riders then my legs go dead, nobody else will get dropped when i do, i have nothing left. it seems like it only happens in a while, maybe every 4-5 weeks, it sucks! it feels impossible to even do endurance pace. i also have lower back problems that seem to sap a lot of my power, i think that may be a major factor too.
