When I was doing lab work way back when, HPF meant "high power field" and was used when doing
microscopic examination of a urine specimen. The numbers you give as normals would agree with this
being a microscopic exam of a urine specimen, and 1001/hpf would be very abnormal in that case.
I wonder what type of blood test they were doing. Most blood counts are now automated, and even when
manual counts were done HPF wasn't used.
I'd make sure of what type of test they were doing, and if it was a microscopic urine exam that kind
of result may indicate an infection.
