The Kahuna is basically a cheaper version of the Kikapu. Both models have higer and lower levels of each (King Kikapu or Kahuna Deluxe for example). They are decent XC bikes. The Kikapu is lighter and has an air fork. Discs are the way to go these days if you can afford them. Good V brakes work fine until it gets wet and muddy then...watch out.

Well, have fun choosing one and you really do get what you pay for with new bikes. Ask for referrals for a good LBS and put some faith in a professional to guide you through the process. Go get dirty!

Kona seem to have pulled something on us in this regard for the '04 models, i'm also looking at an '04 kikapu (regular).

Pricewise the '03 Kahuna is on par with the '04 Kikapu, where the '03 Kikapu was a much more expensive machine. I just so happen to have the specs lined up side by side here (just doing the research myself).

The main two differences i can see is the Marzocchi EXR-Comp (80mm) on the '03 Kahuna and the Marzocchi MZ-Comp (100mm), and the brakes. Avid FR-1 Discs on the Kikapu '04 and Avid SD3 on the Kahuna '03.

The '04 Kikapu seems to be the real bargain in the '04 Kona lineup, and i can safely say i'll have one in the garage before too long. (or a run-out '03 Kahuna model) As i'm thinking of replacing the brakes with hayes hydraulics, the difference isnt worth the extra cash if i can pick up a cheapie kahuna.
