Am entered in a tri in early May where swim is in
reservoir, water projected to be 57 degrees. Question: Is
my "Farmer John" wetsuit (no arms, legs down to ankles)
going to be warm enough, or do I need to get a full wetsuit
with arms to avoid hypothermia? Thanks in advance for
thoughts among group!

57 degrees is very cold. Temp alone is not enough to go on.
How long is the swim and how long do you expect to be in the
water. I would not think of doing an IM distance in a farmer
john but a sprint would not make you hypothermic. 57 will be
uncomfortable even for a short dip. You could always use
your farmer john and purchase a Promotion top . Here is the

for thoughts among group! This past week-end I swam in S.F.Bay in 55 degree water in
a Farmer John. Although I wouldn't want to make a habit of
it I intend to do it again to continue to familiarize
myself with my borrowed wet suit and open water swimming.
Anyway, once my body adjusted to the temperature I felt
fine. I also had a neoprene cap on and I would definitely
recommend one of those.Seth

sensation of water temp is, versus air temp.I once did a half-ironman in 61 degrees, no wetsuit. I was
young, stupid, and wetsuits had not yet caught on - - many
years ago. That experience gave me a peek at how much courage (or
desperation) it must have taken for the ancients to go to
sea. brrrr...rsquared
