...was cycling in Bute a couple of weeks ago and kept bumping into signs for a footpath - the West Island Way. I wondered if it followed the (west) coast from Ettrick Bay, but it veered off inland up Glen More. On the map, the route up the west and round the north of the island looks more interesting, although no path is marked. Perhaps a little more problematic as you approach the Maids of Bute and I dare say there could be some adventure to be had. Anyone know whether this stretch of coast is doable round to the ferry across the Kyles? I suppose if it was, the WIW would have taken it...;-(

Rather a good little route isn't it. Quite a selling point for a little island with no hills to speak of. I did quite a few walks around Bute in October.....fabulous sunny weather. The southern part of the walk takes you round the coast through the atmospheric Blanes chapel ruins and up over the hill(ock) Suidhe Chatain. We also walked up the west coast from Ettrick Bay along a track to Kilmichael. There are several standing stones, cairns & suchlike if you take a few diversions along the way. Don't know if you can go further, Bute is very intensively farmed, but the map looks like it might be possible....interesting around Buttock Point I should think!!! The tourist info place had some walks published. An old one not now for sale seemed to suggest the bit past Buttock point was a waymarked walk, but this walk I found in our accommodation & is no longer"marketed".

Yes, I'd be interested in that stroll down the coast from Kilchattan bay and round to Glen Callum and St Blane's - I presume there's a route up the glen?
Bute doesn't have dramatic hills, but does seem pretty good for a combination of cycling and walking trips; particularly out of season.
I just wondered if the coast north of Kilmichael was worth exploring. or whether you'd come to a dead end at some point...

I suspect there may be a way to explore,but a farm is in the way! There could well be a way round up the hill a little though, or at lowish tide around the coast itself. So no real dead end, but we did not go further...short days!

Indeed they are, and I'll certainly go back in the Spring.
There's quite a network of ferries in and around the Clyde and I'm just looking for ways to make more use of them to get to places I probably wouldn't go otherwise - cycling and/or walking.
