As a belated (sorry, I've been off Usenet for a couple of weeks with
cold, family visits, etc, etc) followup to my posting of the 25th
October on WHW guides/blogs, I'd be interested in any gossip/reviews of
various places to stay on the WHW as myself and partner are currently in
the stage planning, erm, stage. We're going to splash out on B&B, partly
because it's a godawful faff camping and feeding yourself after a long
day's hike, particularly when there's only 8 hours of light in the day,
if that (we're going next eastertime); but mainly because I'd sooner get
Dracula eating pickled garlic than get Herself into a tent in this
country.
I know some of the possible places North of Crianlarich, having done a
fair bit of walkies up there. The Kingshouse is decent enough, though
definitely on its uppers compared to when i first stayed there back in
the mid-90s - a friend at work who'd done the Way recently likened it to
Fawlty Towers, which isn't far off the mark IMHO. The Bridge of Orchy
hotel is hideously expensive at £60pppn and its bunkhouse sucks the big
one, so I'm told, not that I'd stay in a bunkhouse and inflict my
snoring on other innocents. The Clachaig is brilliant but sadly off the
route. Strathfillan Wigwams are damn good, particularly Sun-Thu when you
can get cheapo rates, though of course that would mean carrying sleeping
bags.
And so on. As everyone and her uncle seems to do the Way these days,
there must be some sites out there with first-hand info on hotels, pubs,
b&bs, and the rest. Could anyone point me to some good ones? Any FAQs
out there?
And I'd be very interested in any reports on accommodation from denizens
of this NG. What, for instance, is the Inveroran Hotel like? Great
location, but it would mean rejigging the preceding stages to stop
there. All and any info/gossip/comments welcome. TIA.
