Wellgo R4: Misengineering or User Error?

    In this case, I'm the user, so it could be my error.

    I picked up some WAM-R4s last summer really cheap but looked
    in good shape. They came without cleats and I finally got
    cleats recently.

    The cleat will not clip into the pedal, no matter *what*
    force is applied, whether the pedal is on the bike and foot
    is in the shoe of if pedal is in a vise and one stands on
    the workbench and tries to clip in. Minimum spring force is
    dialed in! Culprit seems to be the convex bottom of the
    insert to aluminum insert to the Lookish-shaped cleat puts
    the rear of the cleat 1-2 mm above the rear jaw.

    R2 and R4:

    I have heard that these were dodgy pedals but, are they
    really completely misengineered? Or are these cleats
    completely wrong? Or failing the first two, should I check
    into the looney bin?

    I would try getting some different cleats?

    I have a set of these pedals collecting dust. I hated them.
    They were very difficult to get into, although otherwise ok.
    Yes, they are misengineered (or mismanufactured). Don't know
    about your cleats. If you're trying to use these pedals,
    then yes, you should definitely check into the looney bin.

    If you're trying to use these pedals with shoes that have
    tread, I doubt they'll work.

    It may be that you _think_ you've got the right position.
    When trying to click in, there's a bunch of ways that the
    cleat can grab the pedal that _feels_ like it's ready for
    you to push down, and only one way that will actually work.
    It doesn't help that the damn pedals are always upside-down
    when you go to use them...

    One-sided pedals especially suck when you're trying to clip
    in on a dark road somewhere. Don't ask me how I know. One
    pair was enough for me, I wound up stripping them for parts,
    fortunately a lot of the pedal pieces are swappable between
    Wellgo pedals.

    Maybe we should clarify. Poorly designed, improperly
    weighted, one-sided pedals, really suck. A well designed
    single sided pedal like the Shimano SPD-SLs can be entered
    without looking at them. As it should be.
