  1. A former cyclist turned powerlifter and return to cyclist in a span of 15 years. ( yeah I dropped 30 lbs) My quads are strong but the upstroke in my spin lags. last year I was having trouble spinning in my 13 and 11 cogs (big ring as well). So I thought of the basic movement of the spin and knew that conventional leg press, curls, lunges and squats arent enough. I had to leave my ego at the door of World Gym and mounted the hip flexor machine. You stand, turn left or right, throw a leg under the padded bar so the pad is just above the tear drop, set the bar far back enough so you get tension thru the whole movement, hold onto the side rail and lift for 20- 40 reps. Man...whew! So back on the bike this summer I noticed a significant gain in strength. I was grinding a bigger gear and not gasping like a smoker. I still include squats and leg presses but humble admittance says, the girly machine did most of the improvments.
Just thought i would pass it along since the season is over and it is that time again.

  2. Please read some of the other threads on weight training and gym work etc. in trained and elite cyclists weights (etc) do not increase endurance cycling performance (events greater ~ 90-secs) as the forces required are low to moderate and can easily be met by age, gender and mass matched sedentary but healthy controls. it's likely that your improvement with weights is purely coincedental, and occured as you had now been training for a longer period of time.
