  1. I've been reading posts for a while and have gotten some great ideas from
you guys, so I thought I'd ask some advice...

I'm planning an August wedding; it's outdoors, on the water (one of the
Finger Lakes in Western NY). The formalities will not be very formal (no
tuxes, no huge bridal party, etc.). I'm approaching it as a big party to
throw... In that vein, I'd like some ideas for a menu. Probably
buffet-style, light fare (sandwhich salads, a cut of meat, some side salads,
etc.). I'm also in need of some pre-meal snacks. We are expecting about
    120 people.

I know what I like, but my tastes tend to be more "ethnic" (I love chinese,
thai, etc.), so I was hoping to incorpoorate some of those tastes without
scaring away my meat & potatoes family...

My other problem is that I have a hard time figuring out a perfect meal,
i.e. dishes that compliment one another, or a meal with some underlying
    theme...

I'd be happy for any suggestions, or if someone out there has served a menu
that they loved, I'd really appreciate the ideas.

One of the most interesting informal weddings we've been to
(in San Diego) had a Mexican theme which would be hard to
    carry out in N.Y.

The ceremony was held by the water, with arches decorated with
tropical flowers, many carried from Hawaii by the bride's aunts.

The cocktail hour served sangria, margaritas, and kegs of the
groom's favorite beers. There were appetizer stations around
the room, huge platters of fruit and cheese and spicy shrimp.

The buffet had all kinds of Mexican/Tex-Mex/Cal-Mex specialties,
refilled often to keep everything fresh and hot, including vegetarian
dishes to keep the bride's friends happy. Ethnic food doesn't always
lend itself to a buffet, but this was very well done and delicious.
