Hi
I'm a novice....
Can someone explain what VO2 max is??
How can I measure this?? Do any gyms have machines that can measure it??
Thanks

I'll try. Most of this is what I've read:
VO2 max is "maximal oxygen uptake" or how much oxygen can be transported
to and used by working muscles. It is the maximal amount of oxygen that
your heart can pump to your muscles and that your muscles can then use
to produce energy. The product of your heart rate times the amount of
blood plumped per beat times the proportion of oxygen extracted from the
blood and used by your muscles. A high VO2 max is most import for success
from 1500 to 5000 meters. The longer the race, the more important lactate
threshold is and the less important VO2 max is.
VO2 max values are expressed in terms of milliliters of oxygen consumed
per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).
VO2 max values:
Sedentary 35-year-old men - 45 ml/kg/min
Sedentary 35-year-old women - 38 ml/kg/min
World class male 5,000 meter runners - 75-85
World class male marathoners - 70-75

I doubt that your gym would have the required equipment. Your VO2 max can
either be determined in a lab, or based on your 3,000 to 5,000 meter race
pace, or about 95 to 98% of your maximum heart rate.

A quick addition: VO2max can also be expressed as liters of oxygen per
minute (L/min). In many ways this is a better way to look at it as any
changes will be due to a change in fitness and not a change in weight as
relative measures can be (ml/kg/min).
