Checked to see the latest from my undergrad alma mater's swim team (U of L); found the following:
Pictured: Diane Parker (photo by Kip Sloan) GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina's Swimming and
Diving team opens up its 2003-04 season Monday afternoon with a meet against Louisville at 1 p.m.
Due to Louisville transportation problems, the meet will go on as scheduled with the Pirates
swimming in Greenville and the Cardinals swimming in Louisville, Ky. Scores will be updated after
every four events.

This suggests a solution to the problem of the disappearing college swim teams. The logical
progression of the above is that there is no reason even to have a team train together on campus.
Schools without a pool could still compete at the intercollegiate level by having swimmers go, on
their own, to the local "Y" (or LA Fitness, or whereever) and swim a time trial, e-mail their
times, and, presto, wait for the computer to determine whether the Pirates beat the Cardinals, or
vice versa.
Would work for dual meets, conference championships; heck, even for the NCAAs.
Worried about terrorist attacks at the Olympics?.....no problem.
