    Hi All,

    As an Ex-Pat living in Vienna Austria , I have had this dream for ages now of taking the challenge
    and cycling back to my home town close to Heathrow Airport UK. (then fly back, or fly in and ride to
    Vienna) As I will be leaving my job in the middle of October , Im really contemplating if I should
    take the oppurtunity and make my dream come true.I have been on several "middle trips=300-400km"
    physically Im in great shape and I also have I think a top class bike that with a good service
    should get me easlily through the 1000km ? .

    So I have searched Google spent enjoyable hours reading lots of adventures of people cycling all
    over the World www-math.science.unitn.itBike but I have not really found anything "yet"
    that gives a good account of a Vienna -London route(Passau, or Salzburgf is also ok! I know how to
    get there 🙂 + the costs, where to stay the sights, Countrys etc etc .

    I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right "link" direction and or give me
    information of may-be there account.

    P.S Also what are your feelings of cycling in October ? is it Weather wise may-be to late ?

    My experience is that there is never the 'exact' link you require. I would suggest that it must be
    possible to follow the Danube up towards Germany. skirt north of the alps through Bavaria, pass
    Stuttgart, cross to the Rhine and turn right, follow the Rhine to Rotterdam/Hook & get the ferry to
    Harwich. Alternatively turn left somewhere around Kolbe/Düsseldorf and head for the channel ports
    through Belgium.

    Budget on 100 km per day unless you are feeling very good -- you will be feeling worse after a few
    days so don't fight it. Allow some rest days -- some of which may be unplanned because the body said
    NO. Budget on hotels and B&B's (camping will be scarce in October) and go for it. Remember Germany
    is quite lumpy in places.

    October is probably getting a little late (because the hours of daylight are getting shorter) but it
    shouldn't be too late unless the weather turns foul.

    Get a good map -- a fairly detailed road atlas would be fine -- and plot your course.

    Have a look at adfc.deadfc.de

    I believe they publish a set of route through Germany. It may be possible for you to link some
    of these up.

    Using it I found

    fahrrad-tour.denindex.htm

    and under Donautal

    I found quite an informative page about Donauradweg (Danube Bike Way)

    which appears to be a German type of C2C (a route for bikes that has stimulated tourist
    accommodation provision). I think it would get from Passau to Basel in 6 or 7 100km stages.

    According to Eurovelo (when its built), there you just have to turn right off

    Route 6 [Costanta (Roumanian Black Sea Coast) to Nantes]

    and on to Route 5 [Brindisi to London ]

    making sure, of course, that you don't get confused in Namur where it crosses Route 3 [Santiago de
    Compostela - North Cape (Norway)].

    The German site seemed to give a lot of reference books about the bike way up the Rhine to
    Strasbourg and beyond. However I couldn't find much about a decent long distance route through
    France to Belgium.
