If the chain starts slipping, then yer balls could get damaged if you stand
up to pedal. Apart from that, nothing else will get damaged once the
chainrings need replacing. Run the drivetrain into the ground then replace
everything in one go.

Thanks all. I rarely stand on the pedals, so a broken chain doesn't
seem a big risk. Might get an LBS opinion on whether its worth getting
a new chain/sprockets with the existing chain rings.

Otherwise I'll wait until either things starting to slip, or decide I
can't cope with the lowest gear of 27" anymore. My previous bike had
23", which I rarely used, but there are two long steep climbs near me
I could only just make - I changed route last night to avoid one of
them.
