If I were you (never had riden) I would start out with an El cheapo bike from Walmart. Or find a cheap used bike. Get one that won't make you upset when you dump it, while getting the hang of keeping your balance. You not only have to get used to balance, but reacting (with control) to traffic, potholes rocks in the road, etc.

If you dump a $50 bike, you'll be annoyed. If you dump a $500 to $2000 bike you'll be royally [censored]. Plus after riding and doing a little more research, You will be better educated on what you want for features on your new bike. And you'll be concentrating more on how the bike feels on the test rides than just keeping your balance.

And set a date to buy your new bike. If you live where the snow comes down in a few months, you might want to wait until early spring for your big purchase. If not give it a couple months of riding, reading and saving for just the right bike for you. Remember any bike you buy, the FIRST thing that matters is a good fit. Be sure to get the right size bike for you (even the cheap one to start).
