I recently purchased a pair of Performance brand Forte Pro Road Pedals. They use SPD cleats. I noticed that while the front of the cleat stays solidly in the pedal, the rear of the cleat moves vertically about 1/16th (or more) of an inch. Of course there is also the horizontal "float." I expected the float but not the vertical movement of the rear part of the cleat in relation to the pedal. Is this normal? When I am pedaling I can feel the rear part of the cleat lift and then stop after it has moved vertically approx. 1/16th (or more) of an inch. Is there any way to deal with this. (I have found that being more focused on "pedaling in a circle" seems to minimize this aft cleat vertical movement but it still does occur.)I know that I could return the pedals to Performance but I am concerned that another pedal will do the same thing. Thank-you in advance for your assistance.

I have not had this problem with different combinations of various Shimano SPuD M (SH-55) and S (SH-51) cleats, 323, 324 and 515 pedals.

Performance brand pedals are built by Wellgo (as are Ritchey and many other non-Shimano clipless pedals). It may be an incompatibility between the cleats and your shoes. It certainly doesn't sound right. I would return them.
Like Tom, I've used Shimano SPD pedals for a long time (going on 13 years) and I've never had this problem.

A follow-up: I sent back the SPD pedals and purchased a pair of Crank Brothers Eggbeater Pedals. I love them. They are very light and are very easy to clip-in. (No fumbling to get the pedal in the proper position.) Getting out of them is not a problem and I can adjust my foot position in them without having to do so against tension. My foot is closer to the pedal axle (enough that I had to move my seat forward) and my foot is held very firmly in place. I love them and would recommed that other recumbent riders consider giving them a try.
