Spotted: New Specialized Venge
Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick-Step) was riding a striking new bike from Specialized at Tour de Suisse this week. Chris Riekert from Specialized was mum about the new model, which is presumably a Venge. He said, "We are constantly working with the best athletes in the world to develop the best bikes and equipment. More information on these products will be available when all of our riders can benefit.” Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

The front end of the bike features remarkable integration, from the stem, through the head tube, and all the way down to the fork and front brake. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

The front brake looks to be a proprietary unit that is nestled in the back of the fork legs. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

Brakediagram
We tracked down this diagram from a patent application filed under the name of a Specialized engineer. These look to be the same brakes featured on the new bike.

Although Specialized won't officially confirm that this is a Venge, the UCI's frame approval list confirms our suspicion that it is the latest iteration of the aero frame. It's listed as "VENGE RIM," implying that a disc model is in the works. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

The wing-shaped handlebars are an interesting touch. It's hard to tell why they're designed this way, but we'd venture a guess that the tops slope upward in order to give Cavendish a more upright position while climbing or cruising. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

Cavendish favors a very low position while riding the drops, so perhaps the bar shape counters his sprint position to afford comfort during less hectic moments. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

The rear brake appears to be essentially the same as the front — hidden, sleek, and likely difficult to adjust for the mechanics. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com

With the Tour de France looming, Cavendish is testing out this new aero bike, which he'll likely rely on in his quest for the green jersey in July. Photo: Tim De Waele | TDWsport.com
