He’s more than just a cyclocross racer. Logan Owen confirmed that with emphasis Wednesday at Tour of Utah, winning a high-speed sprint in Bountiful. The 20-year-old Axeon racer earned the biggest win of his nascent pro road career after a 109.4-mile stage 4. At first, it looked as if UnitedHealthcare would control the sprint. But the blue-and-white riders went too soon, and an opportunistic attack by Dion Smith (Hincapie Racing) got away right before the final kilometer. Two powerhouse teams — BMC and Bardiani-CSF — brought back the solo move, but they left empty handed. Instead, it was Owen, who crossed the line first, by half a wheel.
“It was just all reaction,” said Owen. “When I crossed the line I didn’t really believe I had won the race. … I don’t want to be known as just the cyclocross guy.”
Although he was boxed in, missing time bonuses in the final sprint, Kiel Reijnen (UnitedHealthcare) kept his overall race lead. “As much as the yellow jersey is an honor, it makes it tough to win stages,” he said. “In the end we are really happy with how it turned out. The boys rode really well.”

The early breakaway included Johann Van Zyl (MTN-Qhubeka) — who has been extremely active so far in the first three days of racing — Jasper Bovenhuis (Cannondale-Garmin), Joey Rosskopf (BMC), Wouter Wippert (Drapac), Dion Smith and Tyler Magner (Hincapie).
On the fast descent off Trappers Loop climb, a large crash took out a number of riders in the field, including national champion Matthew Busche (Trek Factory Racing). He was forced to withdraw from the race. Early reports suggested he had a broken collarbone, but the team did not confirm the exact details of the injury.
With about 25 miles left, Wippert was dropped. Heading into final 17 miles of the race, the break had about a one-minute lead on the peloton, with two finishing circuits around Bountiful remaining. The final circuit had a steep, category 3 climb up Temple.
On the first trip up Temple, Smith got a gap, while his teammate, Magner, was dropped. Rosskopf soon bridged up to the leader with 16 miles to go and then rode Smith off his wheel. Over the top, the BMC rider had a lead of 15 seconds. With 12 miles left, his lead extended to 25 seconds as a number of attacks disrupted the chase behind.
When Rosskopf crossed the line to head out for the final lap, his lead was 30 seconds over the peloton, which had absorbed the remnants of the break.
A chase of four riders formed before the final categorized climb. It included Rob Britton (Team SmartStop), Lachlan Norris (Drapac), Marco Canola (UnitedHealthcare), and Phil Gaimon (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies). Norris got away from the chasers and made contact with the leader with a little over seven miles left. He soon attacked Rosskopf in a bid for solo victory.
But Norris never fully broke the elastic. The group of six behind coalesced and made the catch, just before the KOM line. Lachlan Morton (Jelly Belly-Maxxis) bridged to the front, making it a group of seven. A larger chase wasn’t far behind at the top of Temple. Natnael Berhane (MTN-Qhubeka) was next to hit out, quickly getting a lead on the front group.
The peloton was whittled down by the climb, but Reijnen was still in the bunch, his UnitedHealthcare team pulling with the lone leader in sight. The race was all back together just under four miles to go, ahead of the final descent.
UnitedHealthcare took control of the front of the bunch early on the high-speed run-in to the finish, but it seemed to have played its cards too early.
Smith took advantage of a lull in the pace just outside of the final kilometer of racing. He went under the red flag alone with a slight lead.
Bardiani and BMC led out the sprint behind, diving into the last left-hand corner with the leader in sight. Smith was caught in the final 50 meters. Owen emerged and won by half a wheel in the high-speed sprint. Brent Bookwalter (BMC) finished second, and Edwin Avila (Colombia) was third.
On Thursday, stage 4 will offer 127 miles starting and finishing in Soldier Hollow. Three major climbs, including Wolf Creek Pass, a category 2 ascent.
