  1. I'm 43 and started riding a road bike last summer. I rode a mountain bike to work a lot before then, but figured since I never went off-road that I'd make the switch to road biking. I ride whenever I can, or more accurately, when family situations allow; usually twice or three times a week. When I ride to work it's 15mi in, and 15mi back. These past couple weekends I've tried for a couple longer rides and got my first 60mi ride and then a 30mi ride today with a lot of hills.

I'm kinda gearing up for my first bike race that is about a month away. I have no delusions of winning, but it's more of a "support your sport" race for me this year. (I have questions about my first race but that'll be a separate post).

Anyway, I'm leaving for a week to go to a family reunion, but can't afford to pay to ship my bike there. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some exercises to do "off bike" that would keep me moving forward, or at least not backwards. I'm not looking for a 2-hour workout or anything; just something I can do before everyone wakes up. So a best of both worlds kind of thing.

Thanks for any tips you can offer!

  2. If there are rentals available in the area or family you can borrow from you could try that if you have time to do at least a couple rides. I hate running but have been alternating between bike days and do a couple mile jog, it doesn't take as much time and is better than doing nothing.

  3. Pack your running shorts, t-shirt and shoes. You can easily get 30-45 minutes of cardio this way and like cycling, you can explore the local area.
