I am thinking of changing to disc brakes but do not want to spend a fortune. Is it really worth it, I have never used disc brakes before.

2. Do you have disc compatible fork and rear mountings for the calipers?Some bicycles come with V brakes but have all the fittings for disc.
If you don't have them, cost can be prohibitive. -
There are some very affordable discs out there, both mechanical and hydraulic. Just make sure your are set as far as frame, fork and wheel compatibility goes. Do a search in the forums since this issue has been discussed numerous times before.
