  1. This weekend just gone, I was cycling with my Scouts along the
Southdowns way. The peeing rain mixed with chalk and Skog (TM) wore
the brake blocks down on most of the bikes, such that midtrip
adjustment was needed. Many of the bikes were infact BSOs(1), with
alleged suspension front and rear and [censored] brakes. I did what I
could but one of them almost had me beat.

The blocks seemed to be too far away from the rim, so that even with
the adjuster screwed right out they barely made contact. After
adjusting the cable on the brake arm, the arms were almost too close
together, so that the lever action had no effect. The spacers were
fitted correctly - big one inboard of the brake arm. Was this just a
case of badly worn blocks or did I miss something else? The bike was
only a week or two old, so the blocks weren't significantly worn
    beforehand.

Or the brake posts were welded onto the forks at the wrong spacing. I've
seen that, on BSOs. I've seen one post fully 15mm higher than it's pair.
I've seen posts which were not parallel to each other. I've seen forks
where the dropouts were different heights.

You'd assume that even in the most backstreet, sweatshop BSO factory in the
most rundown part of Vietnam they'd have a jig to make sure the brake
posts went on square, but it seems it isn't so.
