I have an 18 speed MTB and would like to put a new chainset on it as it
and the chain are a little worn. It has indexed gears, a Shimano front
changer and a 28-38-48 chainset with rivetted on rings. If I put a
modern chainset on it that is designed for a 8/9 speed chain, e.g. a
Shimano Deore M510 26-36-48 (and keep my 6 speed freewheel for now) is
everything likely to work? What sort of chain would I need to work with
a 6 speed freewheel and such a modern chainset? The chainset that I've
mentioned is perhaps a bit good for the bike, but it rides very nicely
and I've been offered it very cheap by a mate. Thanks for any advice.
