It works ! Thanks Sheldon !
My old steel Stumpjumper was the platform for experimentation on a
multi-geared-single/fixed ride.
I ended up with a 32T chainring x 17/19 combo freewheel from White
Industries and a 36T chainring x 14 fixed on an Eric's Eccentric hub.
The chain lines and length have worked out well. The smaller 32T
chainring is in the outside position per Sheldon's suggestion. This
offers an acceptable chainline onto the freewheel, while the 36T on
the inside makes for a perfect chainline for the 14 fixed cog.
I can get to the park across town without making like an 5 MPH
eggbeater. Flip it around for the hilly areas, and enjoy riding
through the singletrack babyheads without fear of certain death.
When flipping from fixed to free the bike feels like a dog for a short
while. Climbing seems so much easier fixed on my road bikes as well.
If you're interested I have some photos. E-mail me.
